Global mobilization aimed at saving lives of millions of women and children

Every day 800 women die during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, and nearly all of these deaths are avoidable. Still too many women in low- and middle-income countries have difficulty accessing the needed healthcare services and medicines. Today over 100 health partnerships involving the research-based pharmaceutical industry target women and children's health. They train nurses, midwives and health educators to provide skilled assistance during pregnancy, labor and delivery, as well as to care for infants and children. They also help strengthen health infrastructures by equipping hospitals and providing them with essential medicines while others ensure better nutrition for mothers and children; deliver mass vaccination programs, and provide access to antibiotics and programs to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
